Pathways to Change, a South African based NGO, seeks to employ 2 Professional Nurses for School Health to provide Biomedical Health Services in collaboration with the Provincial and District Departments of Health and Education. The project is implemented under the auspices NACOSA, as part of the Global Fund intervention for Adolescent and Young People in South Africa. Position: Professional Nurse – School Health programme

Purpose: To provide direct support for the implementation of the Integrated School Health Programme (ISHP) with the District Health Team at the identified schools, working closely with the Departments of Education and Health and NACOSA community partners. This will include the provision of comprehensive prevention and

early intervention service in line with the provision of children’s Act 38 of 2005.

Location: Northern Cape – Sol Plaatje Sub-district Requirements:

Overview of Responsibilities: reporting to the Clinical Manager

Working with DOH school health team providing all services required and supporting all campaigns.

Support community team Biomedical and Non-biomedical to ensure linkage by initiating of ARV, SRH and other health services when required. Provide a comprehensive health package to all grades 1 and 8 learners in quintile 1 to 5 schools and special, including learners repeating grades as per national guidelines.

Develop systems for mainstreaming care and support for learners. Early identification and addressing of health barriers for learners. Provide advice and information on health issues and associated treatment regimens to ensure effective service of care and retention where required. Provide health education on hand washing, personal and environmental hygiene, nutrition, TB, substance abuse, poisoning, know your body, abuse (sexual, physical and emotional abuse including bullying, violence). Understand and know the relevant referral pathways to ensure efficient linkage to specialist services. Making a Nursing diagnosis according to Policy, Protocol and Guidelines. Attending to Trauma and medical emergencies according to Protocol, Policies and Guidelines. Managing follow up care of referrals, liaising with local clinics and linkage officers within the project. Supporting the Biomedical team where this is required and when possible.

Reporting and administration as required and in line with Organisational and Funder requirements. Work closely with NACOSA community partners and other stakeholders for the implementation of ISHP.
